A sneak preview of the EU Ecodesign label for electronics, textiles, furniture, mattresses and other products

20 December 2025

The European Commission plans to introduce a new product label for textiles, furniture, mattresses, tyres, electronics, steel, and other products covered by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU/2024/1781). While not widely known yet, this initiative is set to have far-reaching implications across many product groups. It will give consumers a clear, comparable view of environmental performance—both in-store and online.

The label will be the visible expression of new product indicators that companies will need to calculate. Depending on the product category, these may include carbon emissions, recycled content, recyclability, repairability, and durability, as defined in upcoming delegated acts.

Work on the label’s design has already begun. The European Commission has commissioned a scientific consortium—Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), Ramboll, Oeko-Institut, Waide Strategic Efficiency (Paul Waide), and VITO—to explore and develop label options. Seven prototype designs have been produced, and stakeholders can comment on each via a survey open until January 4, 2026.

Several key questions still need to be resolved, such as whether the on-product label should differ from its digital version, which colours should be used, how it will align with existing labels (like the energy label and tyre label), and how best to communicate environmental performance. EcoWise is supporting companies in preparing for these changes through its Digital Product Passport service, enabling online access to the ecodesign label, and helping ensure consumers are guided as effectively as possible.
