First Official CEN Blueprint to create a Digital Product Passport now available – Businesses Now Have a Head Start 

London & Milan, 03 June 2025 

  • The Digital Product Passport is the new IT solution for creating product information transparency for any product and sector.  
  • Globally a growing number of governments, including the EU, China and the UK, are actively setting up or considering an official Digital Product Passports registry for market compliance and customs trade management.  
  • The first Digital Product Passports roll-out will be required for car batteries, textiles and steel products in 2027 in the European Union.
  • The official pre-standard for companies to guide the creation and issuing of their Digital Product Passports is now available from CEN-CENELEC.

EcoWise a digital solutions provider, and UNI, the national standardisation body of Italy, have jointly developed 'Guidelines to create a Digital Product Passport – the EU CircThread project experience” together with over 100 collaborating companies, universities, non-profits and other organisations.

Dr. Rembrandt Koppelaar, Director at EcoWise and chair of the initiative said “Now companies have a blueprint available to design what to digitalise and how to enter an exciting new era of digital product information management” The guide is a CEN Workshop Agreement or pre-standard, which is an official reference instrument hosted by CEN-CENELEC the EU standardisation organisation. Fabio Rossi, technical officer at UNI and standardisation lead for the initiative said “The guidelines bring clarity for companies and their lifecycle partners on the benefits of and considerations they need to design and issue their Digital Product Passports.” 

The guidelines were developed as a final outcome of the EU funded CircThread project that ran from 2021 to 2025. CircThread project’s partners worked for four years on developing new models to shareproduct information across the life cycle of products.
